Why Martinhal is the perfect place for a luxury family holiday

Why Martinhal is the perfect place for a luxury family holiday

7 January 2013 | Comments (0)

Following an unforgettable week in Portugal with her young family, Western & Oriental’s Claire Watling explains why that when it comes to trouble-free luxury family holidays, Martinhal is hard to beat…

“After a long, long saga of changing nappies, weaning, teething, walking then finally tantrums within the Watling family, we decided that we all needed a holiday. It didn’t take long for us to realise that this holiday was going to be quite different to our last (our honeymoon in the Maldives, which seemed a lifetime away).  However, I knew that there were a few things that would make the holiday enjoyable for the whole family and our lives much easier.

To start with, there was no way I wanted to fly for over 4 hours with a 19-month-year-old on my lap. She doesn’t sit still for 5 minutes at home so why should she on a plane?  We decided on Portugal; 2 and a half hours from London and plenty of airlines flying out at different times of the day so that we could choose one that fit our routine. We also didn’t want it to be too hot and Portgual had perfect weather in May.

Try to minimise flight time when flying with young kids

Next was location. We wanted to be close to a village so we could go for a walk in the afternoon or evening, it also needed to be pretty and not too far from the airport. The Martinhal Beach Resort in the Western Algarve fitted these requirements perfectly. It’s 1 and half hours from the airport (forward facing car seats included in the transfers) and only 15 minutes along the beach from the historic town of Sagres.

Marching on the beach

Set within a national park area, the Martinhal is surrounded by rolling wild grasses and c0lourful flowers. Walks, mountain biking and marine excursions can be arranged from the hotel for those who are in need of activity.

I realised that, for best part of a year, my little one had had her own room -she was used to that and certainly so were we.  However, with its 1-3 bedroom houses, this really was a home from home where we never had to compromise on our child’s comfort. Each house has its own living room and full kitchen (including washing machine, fridge, oven, microwave) meaning you can be flexible when it comes to the needs of a young child. We ate breakfast early in the kitchen if she woke before 8 and were able to keep snacks, milk etc. in the fridge. The supermarket stocked everything we needed: nappies, wipes, swim nappies, milk and all the essential food items.

A home from home ensures comfort and convenience

If the little one was having an “off” day we would have lunch in our house while she napped in peace. We could still use the balconies and living room in the day and night without disturbing her. I wondered how she would sleep in a strange bed in new surroundings but I needn’t have worried.  All the bedrooms have black out blinds so she didn’t wake too early, and we had a few lie ins past 8 o’clock!

We also made sure there was a stairgate and highchair in the house (complimentary), a godsend at home. We didn’t bother with the door jam, changing mat or steriliser but these can all be provided.

Great facilities were a must and the Martinhal has these in spades,  including 5 swimming pools, tennis courts, a fantastic beach, village square with supermarket, a kids club and creche, 3 restaurants and something that a working mum always needs – a spa!

Excellent facilities are a must

There were two main pools we used most days: one down by the beach which featured a massive sand play area, and one nearer to the village which was partly under cover – ideal for some respite from the sun. The sandy beach is renowned for windsurfing and it can get quite breezy in the summer months but for us it was perfect. What more can a child want than a bucket and spade and to run in and out if the sea!

The eating habits of young ones are predictably unpredictable so flexible dining options are always welcome. We loved eating out at O Dunas restaurant where dinner started at 5pm, which was extremely convenient if we needed an early night. The Italian restaurant in the village square is fantastic for those special occasions when the kids are with the babysitter. The food was delicious, excellent value for money and they even offer takeaway. Children are well catered for in the main restaurant with their own plastic beakers, plates, spoons and forks. They have 3 sizes of high chair and in high season they even have a kids club member on hand to entertain them whilst you are finishing your breakfast.

A wide choice of dining options allows more flexibility

Of course, you’ll want some assistance in keeping the kids occupied, and although we didn’t use the kids club at the Martinhal due to wanting to spend as much time as possible together as a family, the range of facilities on offer was fantastic. The baby room was filled with baby gyms, soft matting etc. while the the toddler room was massive with fantastic role play toys. The kids club was chargeable and all the activities was tailored to the children’s ages. Toddlers at Raposinhos can try their hand at face painting or join an outdoor treasure hunt. There is also a Blue Room which offers table tennis, pool, computers and movie screenings. There is also creatively designed children’s playground featuring a helicopter as its centerpiece!

Keep the young ones busy with a kids club

Older kids can join the Explorers and Adventure Club where among other things they can learn to windsurf, go dolphin watching and take a junior lifeguard course. The Martinhal also features football and tennis academies where kids can hone their sporting skills or learn new techniques from fully trained instructors.

The kids shouldn’t be the only ones getting pampered on a family holiday and it’s important to allow some quality time for yourself. If there was one thing I was looking forward to most it was a massage and facial in the spa –  something I would never be able to fit in at home. The spa was lovely,  a wonderful oasis of calm with a tranquil chill-out area to relax in before and after my treatments. My last massage was on the day before we came home, it was so pleasant to be able to gather my thoughts and reflect on what a wonderful holiday we’d had.

Don't forget to treat yourself to some "me time"

The past 19 months had been a rollercoaster but now we were relaxed, rested and looking forward to the next 19 months. I have a feeling we’ll be back to the Martinhal again… it’s exactly what we wanted and needed. An amazing, memorable luxury family holiday.”

Postcards from our staff…Insight & Inspiration Included

14 November 2012 | Comments (0)

Here at Western & Oriental, we sell luxury holidays based on personal experience and passion! Below are some postcards from our staff describing their recent holiday adventures, their favourite hotels and top tips for the best sunset locations, sea-view dining spots and spectacular sights to see! Perhaps you will be inspired as you read on…

Far East Product Manager Gemma Wilson visited SANTORINI

Santorini is quite unlike any other Greek island I’ve visited. The views from the west coast are genuinely awe-inspiring and the white washed buildings with the blue domed roofs were stunning. The best places to view the gorgeous sunset is from one of the seafood restaurants on the Oia harbourside or whilst sipping a cocktail at the poolside bar at my hotel. I stayed at The Grace Santorini, which was very chic and minimalist. I loved the champagne breakfast and the unobstructed ocean views from the rooms, the main infinity pool and the restaurant. And that’s without even mentioning the unwavering high level of service, which was very personalised.

Travel Specialist Vicki King travelled to VIETNAM

From the moment you arrive in Vietnam you feel this is not going be the average beach holiday. We engulfed ourselves in Vietnamese culture, from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi’s French Quarter to a cruise around Halong Bay and witnessing the floating villages’ traditional way of life. I stayed at the Six Senses Ninh Van Bay – the moment you step off the boat it feels like you are on a desert island. The crystal clear waters were ideal for snorkeling. The perfect end to our stay was a beach BBQ while we watched the sunset over the bay with a cocktail.

Travel Specialist Amit Dhoj Khadka visited NEPAL

Although I was born in Nepal, I haven’t been there for a while so I was really excited to go back and see the family, but also take in the amazing sights that make Nepal so popular. After a dose of World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu, including the Monkey Temple, I headed south to the plains of Chitwan for elephant safari and canoe rides. Finally, I ended my trip amongst spectacular views and beautiful lakes in the Himalayas – needless to say, I can’t wait to return!

Marketing Executive Natasha Priddy flew to SAINT LUCIA

My highlights in Saint Lucia included sailing around the west coast on a catamaran, sulphur mud baths which gave me super soft skin and the beautiful beach at Rodney Bay. Dinner at Cap Maison was a luxury experience. From the unobstructed views of the sea where you can see the sparkling lights of Martinique, to the soulful voices of the singers, not to mention the vibrant cocktails. My time at The Hotel Chocolat has left me with fantastic family memories. Making chocolate from scratch was fantastic and meals that all incorporated chocolate – a cocoa dip with my starter and a cocoa dusted burger were treats my siblings loved!

Travel Specialist Dhiren Shah visited the CANARY ISLANDS

A great place for December or February is the Canary Islands, an all-year round warm destination with over 300 days of sunshine on average. One of my favourite resorts is the Gran Hotel Bahia Del Duque in Costa Adeje, Tenerife. The location is perfect, by a promenade with a lovely sandy beach. The promenade offers choices of restaurants and bars – you can even hire roller blades or bikes to explore it. All the staff are dressed in authentic Canarian outfits and there’s a fantastic kids club.

Travel Specialist Nikhil Chhibber travelled to INDIA…again

I travel to India 3-5 times in a year to enhance my ability to design unique India experiences. I personally feel India is best done overland which provide great opportunities to see and experience countryside and real India. For people with limited time, India offers luxury trains like Palace on Wheels,  Maharajas’ Express and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels. I have been on all the luxury trains in India and was very fortunate to go on the inaugural journey of Maharaja Express in March 2010. India is not just a destination, it is a passion.

I was so fed up with The Great British Summer that I decided to take a late break to Crete. The Greeks are as friendly, welcoming and generous as ever. Crete is outstandingly beautiful with breathtaking coastal and mountain drives, deserted beaches and my favourite day trip is to the uninhabited Chrissi Island 8 miles off the south coast. I stayed at Domes of Elounda, where each guest can enjoy their own Jacuzzi or private pool, and fantastic views of Spinalonga Island. Best of all, it was 35′C!

Travel Specialist Sarah Frankish visited VIETNAM

I spent 10 days travelling the central and southern regions of Vietnam, visiting Danang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Con Dao Island and the cosmopolitan city of Ho Chi Minh. Vietnam is my favourite South East Asian country. I never tire of the landscaped views, the delicious food (where you’re still able to buy a meal for only a couple of pounds) and the unique Vietnamese traditions and culture. When I do go back, a trip up north to Ha Giang (to visit the most remote tribes) and a cruise along the deeper realms of the Mekong Delta remain top of my list!

Travel Specialist Julie Mathews flew to the MALDIVES

I have recently returned from an amazing five night trip to the Maldives where I spent a different night on each island. The whole experience was absolutely wonderful – the only downside was I didn’t have enough time! I’m already planning to go back and see some of the other islands. My highlight has to be the fascinating marine life; on one snorkelling trip I was lucky enough to see a whale shark! All the other snorkelling was fantastic – and it’s a must for divers. The trip was a great mix of luxury hotels, fabulous food and beautiful beaches. My two favourite hotels were Kanuhura and Coco Palm Bodu Hithi.

General Manager Matthew Rushbrooke travelled to BALI

I’ve just been to Bali for the fourth time, and I decided not only to take my daughter but the in-laws too! Everyone had a fantastic time because there was so much to do and the weather was gorgeous. My highlights were zip-wiring through the jungle at the Bali Treetops Adventure Park and gazing at the lovely Tanah Lot temple at sunset, it simply stunning (and very romantic!) – also don’t miss seeing the traditional Kecak dance in Uluwatu.

Travel Specialist Ricky Coates visited BORNEO

From the moment I arrived on the island of Borneo, I knew I’d arrived somewhere different. It has a really unique blend of culture, history and modern life. The whole island is rugged and remote, and a real must-see is the orang-utan rehabilitation centre at Shangri-La Rasa Ria. I also really enjoyed bartering in the night market in Kota Kinabalu and looking around the fish market on a Sunday.

Strictly Come Dancings Bruno Tonioli’s Perfect Holiday with Western & Oriental

Strictly Come Dancings Bruno Tonioli’s Perfect Holiday with Western & Oriental

13 September 2012 | Comments (0)

On the day his book, My Story, launches our favourite Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli tells us about what makes his perfect holiday.

Freshly tanned, having just returned from a holiday in Mauritius with Western & Oriental and with his autobiography My Story hitting the shelves this week, we caught up with Strictly judge Bruno.  Just a few weeks ago Bruno was kicking back at one of our favourite spots in Mauritius, taking some time out before the launch of his book and before he jumps back onto the crazy schedule of appearing on Strictly and it’s US equivalent in Los Angeles – Dancing with the Stars.

Bruno stayed at the dreamy Lux* Le Morne in Mauritius where he indulged in his love of tropical islands and understated luxury.

What elements of a holiday score highly with you?

Although I spend much of the year jumping on planes between London and Los Angeles I only jet off for a holiday twice a year – at Christmas and in August normally. So I absolutely love arriving somewhere knowing I have more than a few days there. To wake up in a tropical place where I can crawl to a white sand beach backed by palm trees, eat good food and have everything available in a relaxed setting is my idea of a holiday. Lux* Le Morne was perfect and I will definitely be returning. It ticked so many boxes – the service was spot on, I don’t like being fussed over and for me a hotel that looks after you without you actually noticing that you are being looked after, gets my vote. I enjoyed the layout of the hotel – it provided privacy and peace yet offered access to facilities I enjoy – a gym for my morning work out, free WIFI (this alone gives a hotel six stars in my book. It is outrageous that any hotels still have the cheek to charge!), a huge wide screen TV in my room, professional and friendly staff and treats such as massages.

As a man who divides his time between London and LA do you have any tips to minimise jet lag?

Not new advice but one that works for me – as soon as you take off adjust your watch to the time of your destination. When I am flying west (to LA) I prefer a day flight and to sleep on arrival. Flying east I find a night flight works better and sleep all the way from Los Angeles to London.

Where would you like to go next – any dream destinations?

I have always fancied the South Pacific – Bora Bora, Tahiti, Hawaii (Len tells me it is lovely) with a stop off to look around New Zealand perhaps.

When you crave a bit of culture where do you head?

For city buzz I am lucky in that I get to call London my home and LA my second home. I don’t think you can beat London for culture and shopping.  However Bologna, the area I am from in Northern Italy and Paris are rich in culture and places I love to spend time. To indulge my love of food and history it has to be Scilly – the Grand Hotel Taormina is one of my absolute favourites – the location is spectacular and it is another place that gets the balance of great service with a really relaxed welcoming feeling just right.

How to travel with children on family holidays & stay sane!

How to travel with children on family holidays & stay sane!

15 March 2011 | Comments (0)

Family holidays can be a lot of fun, but would you like to know how to combat the cries of  “are we nearly there yet?” echoing from the back seat of the car on the way to the airport, on the plane and then during the transfer to your resort?

Never fear – read on for my top travel tips for keeping the kids entertained and your sanity intact on you luxury family holidays with some tried and tested games that will make even long haul travel seem like a breeze.

PICTURE PERFECT

Ideal entertainment for flights; create crazy monsters, weird animals or bizarre people by folding a sheet of paper into three. One person draws a face of their choice in the top section and folds down the paper so the next person can’t see it. The second person draws a body, folds down the paper, and passes it to the third person, who draws the legs. Unfold the paper and hilarity will ensue!

THUMB WARS

If you need something a little more active, declare a thumb war. Two people sitting next to each other hook the fingers of their right hands together so both of their thumbs are pointing upwards. Try and pin down your opponent’s thumb using your right thumb – you’ve won if you manage to count to 10 while holding down their thumb. Not as easy as it sounds!

Thumb Wars

CHINESE WHISPERS – WITH A TWIST

A good game for families seated in a row on a plane, the first person, on one end, thinks of a word. The person next to them closes his or her eyes and holds out an arm, and Player 1 ‘writes’ the word on Player 2’s arm using their finger. Like Chinese Whispers, pass the word down the row and even across the aisle until it reaches the last person in your family (or indeed, anyone else who wants to join in!). The last person says what they think the word is, and Player 1 says the original word – more often than not, it’s something completely different! Switch seats and start again.

WORD UP

Give everyone a pencil and a sheet of paper, pick a letter and start a minute’s time on the clock. Everyone writes as many words as they can which start with that letter. At the end of the minute, whoever has the most (real) words wins. To make it more fun, write a sentence using all of the words you’ve written down.

THE CLASSIC

I spy. Hours of fun on any family holiday.

What’s your favourite travel game and way of keeping the children entertained?

Worlds Most Difficult Jigsaw Puzzles

15 March 2011 | Comments (0)

Everyone has one of those embarrassing hobbies that they don’t like people to find out about, varying from collecting random items to doing jigsaw puzzles (don’t deny it!). Speaking of jigsaw puzzles, did you know that they are used to help find balance in the mind and to bring a sense of control back to an overworked brain? Is this one of the reasons why you go on holiday? Well, how about taking a puzzle on holiday so that you can bring a sense of relief to life’s many challenges to help pass your time or keep the children entertained.

With this in mind it made me wonder…what is the largest jigsaw puzzle out there? It turns out there is a 32,000 piece puzzle which was released in September 2010 that has broken the recorded, which when completed is approx 17.8ft by 6.2ft and shown below. I think that it may drive people mad and most wouldn’t have the space for something that big!

I must admit, I don’t find that image the most inspiring. But I did wonder about the most difficult scenery you could have as a puzzle? Just because they are huge, doesn’t necessarily make them as difficult and time consuming, whereas maybe an image of sand or possibly even snow could be more difficult. I am yet to see one of these but do you think you could complete this? Would you ever go on holiday, take a photograph and make a huge puzzle out of it?

How about take a photograph of the golden sand under your feet whilst you are watching the sun set on a deserted beach on a Mauritius holiday?

A photograph of fresh snow on the ground whilst skiing in the Alps?

Plain colours will be far too boring but I’m sure very difficult!  I’m sure there are some incredible photographs which you could take of terraced rice fields on a Bali holiday or paddy fields in India. Imagine trying to get your head around this puzzle::

How about a puzzle of the longest river and the largest tropical rainforest in the world?

Some may perceive it as a slightly geeky thing to do, but if it’s good for the brain I’m not going to complain!

What do you think would be the most difficult puzzle to do?
