Postcards from our staff…Insight & Inspiration Included

14 November 2012 | Comments (0)

Here at Western & Oriental, we sell luxury holidays based on personal experience and passion! Below are some postcards from our staff describing their recent holiday adventures, their favourite hotels and top tips for the best sunset locations, sea-view dining spots and spectacular sights to see! Perhaps you will be inspired as you read on…

Far East Product Manager Gemma Wilson visited SANTORINI

Santorini is quite unlike any other Greek island I’ve visited. The views from the west coast are genuinely awe-inspiring and the white washed buildings with the blue domed roofs were stunning. The best places to view the gorgeous sunset is from one of the seafood restaurants on the Oia harbourside or whilst sipping a cocktail at the poolside bar at my hotel. I stayed at The Grace Santorini, which was very chic and minimalist. I loved the champagne breakfast and the unobstructed ocean views from the rooms, the main infinity pool and the restaurant. And that’s without even mentioning the unwavering high level of service, which was very personalised.

Ha Long Bay at sunset

Ha Long Bay at sunset

Travel Specialist Vicki King travelled to VIETNAM

From the moment you arrive in Vietnam you feel this is not going be the average beach holiday. We engulfed ourselves in Vietnamese culture, from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi’s French Quarter to a cruise around Halong Bay and witnessing the floating villages’ traditional way of life. I stayed at the Six Senses Ninh Van Bay – the moment you step off the boat it feels like you are on a desert island. The crystal clear waters were ideal for snorkeling. The perfect end to our stay was a beach BBQ while we watched the sunset over the bay with a cocktail.

Buddhist pilgrimage site of Swayambhunath, the monkey temple

Travel Specialist Amit Dhoj Khadka visited NEPAL

Although I was born in Nepal, I haven’t been there for a while so I was really excited to go back and see the family, but also take in the amazing sights that make Nepal so popular. After a dose of World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu, including the Monkey Temple, I headed south to the plains of Chitwan for elephant safari and canoe rides. Finally, I ended my trip amongst spectacular views and beautiful lakes in the Himalayas – needless to say, I can’t wait to return!

Marketing Executive Natasha Priddy flew to SAINT LUCIA

My highlights in Saint Lucia included sailing around the west coast on a catamaran, sulphur mud baths which gave me super soft skin and the beautiful beach at Rodney Bay. Dinner at Cap Maison was a luxury experience. From the unobstructed views of the sea where you can see the sparkling lights of Martinique, to the soulful voices of the singers, not to mention the vibrant cocktails. My time at The Hotel Chocolat has left me with fantastic family memories. Making chocolate from scratch was fantastic and meals that all incorporated chocolate – a cocoa dip with my starter and a cocoa dusted burger were treats my siblings loved!

Travel Specialist Dhiren Shah visited the CANARY ISLANDS

A great place for December or February is the Canary Islands, an all-year round warm destination with over 300 days of sunshine on average. One of my favourite resorts is the Gran Hotel Bahia Del Duque in Costa Adeje, Tenerife. The location is perfect, by a promenade with a lovely sandy beach. The promenade offers choices of restaurants and bars – you can even hire roller blades or bikes to explore it. All the staff are dressed in authentic Canarian outfits and there’s a fantastic kids club.

Travel Specialist Nikhil Chhibber travelled to INDIA…again

I travel to India 3-5 times in a year to enhance my ability to design unique India experiences. I personally feel India is best done overland which provide great opportunities to see and experience countryside and real India. For people with limited time, India offers luxury trains like Palace on Wheels,  Maharajas’ Express and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels. I have been on all the luxury trains in India and was very fortunate to go on the inaugural journey of Maharaja Express in March 2010. India is not just a destination, it is a passion.

Group Head of Product David Pointer flew to GREECE

I was so fed up with The Great British Summer that I decided to take a late break to Crete. The Greeks are as friendly, welcoming and generous as ever. Crete is outstandingly beautiful with breathtaking coastal and mountain drives, deserted beaches and my favourite day trip is to the uninhabited Chrissi Island 8 miles off the south coast. I stayed at Domes of Elounda, where each guest can enjoy their own Jacuzzi or private pool, and fantastic views of Spinalonga Island. Best of all, it was 35′C!

Po Nagar Cham Temple Towers in Nha Trang

Travel Specialist Sarah Frankish visited VIETNAM

I spent 10 days travelling the central and southern regions of Vietnam, visiting Danang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Con Dao Island and the cosmopolitan city of Ho Chi Minh. Vietnam is my favourite South East Asian country. I never tire of the landscaped views, the delicious food (where you’re still able to buy a meal for only a couple of pounds) and the unique Vietnamese traditions and culture. When I do go back, a trip up north to Ha Giang (to visit the most remote tribes) and a cruise along the deeper realms of the Mekong Delta remain top of my list!

Travel Specialist Julie Mathews flew to the MALDIVES

I have recently returned from an amazing five night trip to the Maldives where I spent a different night on each island. The whole experience was absolutely wonderful – the only downside was I didn’t have enough time! I’m already planning to go back and see some of the other islands. My highlight has to be the fascinating marine life; on one snorkelling trip I was lucky enough to see a whale shark! All the other snorkelling was fantastic – and it’s a must for divers. The trip was a great mix of luxury hotels, fabulous food and beautiful beaches. My two favourite hotels were Kanuhura and Coco Palm Bodu Hithi.

General Manager Matthew Rushbrooke travelled to BALI

I’ve just been to Bali for the fourth time, and I decided not only to take my daughter but the in-laws too! Everyone had a fantastic time because there was so much to do and the weather was gorgeous. My highlights were zip-wiring through the jungle at the Bali Treetops Adventure Park and gazing at the lovely Tanah Lot temple at sunset, it simply stunning (and very romantic!) – also don’t miss seeing the traditional Kecak dance in Uluwatu.

Travel Specialist Ricky Coates visited BORNEO

From the moment I arrived on the island of Borneo, I knew I’d arrived somewhere different. It has a really unique blend of culture, history and modern life. The whole island is rugged and remote, and a real must-see is the orang-utan rehabilitation centre at Shangri-La Rasa Ria. I also really enjoyed bartering in the night market in Kota Kinabalu and looking around the fish market on a Sunday.

The Gili Islands have a renowned reputation for being the turtle capital, such as green and hawksbill turtles, but there is a lot more to discover here. With over twenty dive sits to explore, from underwater canyons and walls, as well as cuttle fish, lion fish, bump head parrot fish, blue ringed octopus and frogfish, as well as white tipped sharks. While on your Bali holiday, we also recommend that you head to Manta Point to see the gently sloping reef covered in corals, reef sharks, octopus and, of course, manta rays!

A wonderful experience can be found at Los Isoltes, where captivating Californian sea lions will be curious enough to approach you underwater.

Egypt

Not many people know this when they are on their Egypt holiday, but Egypt is home to one of the most renowned wreck dives on the planet. In 1941 the British SS Thistlegorm sunk in the Red Sea on its voyage transporting supplies to soldiers stationed in Alexandria. Sitting on the ocean floor are rifles, jeeps, radios and boots, as well as the ship. The hole left by the German bomb is visible! To add to the drama, look out for crocodile fish! Also on the Sinai Peninsula is Ras Mohammed National Park with the stunning Yolanda and Shark Reefs.

Malaysia

The Sabah province is Malaysia’s diving haven. Head to Sipadan Island to see green and hawksbill turtles; there is even a turtle tomb, 22m underwater. Highlights include facing down a school of barracuda and the renowned Drop Off, where the ocean floor dramatically drops 600m! Malaysia holidays will also give you the chance to encounter hammerhead sharks at Layang Layang, whilst admiring its beautiful coral.

Thailand

In the Andaman Sea lie the paradise islands named Surin and Similan, where divers are likely to spot magical manta rays and leopard sharks. Close-by is Richelieu Rock, the place to head to if you fancy swimming alongside a whale shark. These gentle giants are like gold dust, yet sightings here are common. The rock is coral-encrusted, with glistening giant trevallies and dogtooth tuna whizzing past – a gem of a dive!

Surin Island National Park, Thailand

Costa Rica

Cocos Island, a marine national park, is a world-renowned diving site. Set in the Golden Triangle and 300 miles from mainland, it takes commitment to visit but is well worth it! Divers will find over twenty sites to dive, from never-ending vertical walls to drift diving spots. Magnificent silvertip, hammerhead and guitar sharks, manta rays, eels and can all be found here, as well as deep sea creatures such as red-lipped Cocos batfish!

Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

Divers exploring Providenciales reef, Turks & Caicos

Turks & Caicos

Famous for being the third largest reef on the planet, the Turks & Caicos islands are a fantastic diving destination. With a 7,000ft drop in its ocean bed, wall diving here is incredible. The walls are covered in colourful corals and sponges. Providenciales, Grand Turk and Salt Cay host the top diving spots, with great visibility so you can spot the marine life.

Myanmar (Burma)

Diving in Myanmar’s waters near secluded islands feels delightfully off the beaten track. Divers could be swimming amongst dogtooth tuna, manta rays and unicorn fish. At Shark Cave you will also find grey reef sharks as well as yellow sponges and corals. Added to this there is a plethora of crustaceans, varying from lobster to shrimp and crab, alongside fascinating octopus and cuttlefish. Explore Black and Tower Rocks’ steep walls and submerged boulders too!

Strictly Come Dancings Bruno Tonioli’s Perfect Holiday with Western & Oriental

Strictly Come Dancings Bruno Tonioli’s Perfect Holiday with Western & Oriental

13 September 2012 | Comments (0)

On the day his book, My Story, launches our favourite Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli tells us about what makes his perfect holiday.

Freshly tanned, having just returned from a holiday in Mauritius with Western & Oriental and with his autobiography My Story hitting the shelves this week, we caught up with Strictly judge Bruno.  Just a few weeks ago Bruno was kicking back at one of our favourite spots in Mauritius, taking some time out before the launch of his book and before he jumps back onto the crazy schedule of appearing on Strictly and it’s US equivalent in Los Angeles – Dancing with the Stars.

Bruno stayed at the dreamy Lux* Le Morne in Mauritius where he indulged in his love of tropical islands and understated luxury.

What elements of a holiday score highly with you?

Although I spend much of the year jumping on planes between London and Los Angeles I only jet off for a holiday twice a year – at Christmas and in August normally. So I absolutely love arriving somewhere knowing I have more than a few days there. To wake up in a tropical place where I can crawl to a white sand beach backed by palm trees, eat good food and have everything available in a relaxed setting is my idea of a holiday. Lux* Le Morne was perfect and I will definitely be returning. It ticked so many boxes – the service was spot on, I don’t like being fussed over and for me a hotel that looks after you without you actually noticing that you are being looked after, gets my vote. I enjoyed the layout of the hotel – it provided privacy and peace yet offered access to facilities I enjoy – a gym for my morning work out, free WIFI (this alone gives a hotel six stars in my book. It is outrageous that any hotels still have the cheek to charge!), a huge wide screen TV in my room, professional and friendly staff and treats such as massages.

As a man who divides his time between London and LA do you have any tips to minimise jet lag?

Not new advice but one that works for me – as soon as you take off adjust your watch to the time of your destination. When I am flying west (to LA) I prefer a day flight and to sleep on arrival. Flying east I find a night flight works better and sleep all the way from Los Angeles to London.

Where would you like to go next – any dream destinations?

I have always fancied the South Pacific – Bora Bora, Tahiti, Hawaii (Len tells me it is lovely) with a stop off to look around New Zealand perhaps.

When you crave a bit of culture where do you head?

For city buzz I am lucky in that I get to call London my home and LA my second home. I don’t think you can beat London for culture and shopping.  However Bologna, the area I am from in Northern Italy and Paris are rich in culture and places I love to spend time. To indulge my love of food and history it has to be Scilly – the Grand Hotel Taormina is one of my absolute favourites – the location is spectacular and it is another place that gets the balance of great service with a really relaxed welcoming feeling just right.

Western & Oriental’s David Pointer to cycle across the UK in four days

6 September 2012 | Comments (0)

Scroll down to follow David’s daily update

It’s not long till I will be getting comfy on my cycle seat and that is where I will stay for four days as I cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End, 880 miles in 4 days (I hope as I can’t stand the thought of it taking any longer!). I will be setting off at 4am from John O’Groats on 20th September 2012 and will be cycling on average 14–16 hours per day depending on weather conditions, this doesn’t include lunch stops and alike, so with that in mind I will be surviving on about 4 hours of sleep a day if I am lucky!

I have been amazed with everyone’s generosity so far and have already raised £2170 and counting, so I thank you all for supporting me and MacMillan Cancer Care.

Mon 24/09/2012 15:32 – Cornish pasty in Cornwall

Only 60 miles to go to the end!!!!

Mon 24/09/2012 07:06 - Severe Weather Warnings

Severe weather warnings for Devon and Cornwall was the first thing I heard when I switched the TV on this morning!!! Let’s hope it is a tail wind and it blows me to Lands End quickly, must remember to change my brake pads again to make sure I stop and don’t get blown over the ‘End of the Land’

Sun 23/09/2012 21:26 - So near, but too far

Due to getting to Shrewsbury at midnight I didn’t wake until 6am so left at 7am. If I knew then what was going to happen today with weather I would have left earlier. I made good progress and was in Hereford by midday. Vicky’s (one of my support team) parents came and met us there with pasties and to show their support. It had started to rain by then and boy did it rain. The next 16 miles were hills after hills before reaching the River Wye and following the valley to Chepstow, a beautiful, I must remember to go back in the summer. Across the Severn Bridge, wet and windy was an understatement. We went through Bristol and headed south on the A38. This was tough work, these are real hills, and to make things worse it was windy and pouring with rain. I was soaked through, shivering, my left knee had packed up and had lost all feeling in my left hand, so that’s when I decided to call it a day and go and get myself fit and ready to complete the ride on Monday.

You won’t believe my disappointment that I didn’t complete the ride in 4 days. If I had had perfect conditions, some idiot hadn’t locked my bike away when he knew I needed it at 4am, I would have been able to do it.

Has been an emotional roller coaster again today especially due to not completing the ride In the time frame I had said, really sorry guys, but – am sure you agree 5 days still isn’t bad, maybe next time  (never will I email Kerry again on a drunken evening and set myself up with something so ridiculous, this has taught me one big lesson) Can I thank you all for your amazing support, emails, texts and comments on Facebook, it has been those that have kept me going throughout Lands End see you sometime Monday

Thanks

Nutter

Sun 23/09/2012 21:06 – Saturday – The best day so far

An early start again at 5am. Freezing cold but stunning sunrise as I started heading south, although obviously the lack of sleep and numerous pain killers must have kicked as I thought I was going the wrong way thinking the sun should rise on my right hand side so why was it on my left. I had also  started to hallucinate too so maybe it was the pain killers.

A frosty start but as soon as the sun came up it was the first time I could get rid of the thermal top and wind cheater and I could show off the Western & Oriental branded cycling kit!!!!

I conquered the Shap with ease and took in the amazing scenery down the other side coming into Kendal, a stunning area (Even Stalin is a convert, saying its not that bad up north).

Continued through Lancaster, my flat mate came and gave me support in Preston (her home town) and then through Wigan (scary town) and arrived in Shrewsbury at midnight. All in all a successful day of riding but still not far enough to get me to Land’s End on Sunday

Sat 22/09/2012 09:22 - The Shap

For those that don’t know it. Its where the countries highest motorway passes through and I am now about to ride over it.

New brake pads fitted ready for the ride down the other side.

Feeling the pain today and getting tired as surviving of 3 hrs sleep a night.

Sat 22/09/2012 07:17 - Cumbria

Hills hills and more hills are all I. Can see

Sat 22/09/2012 00:40 - Night Rider & Comets

I was going to call today ‘The easiest day became the hardest’.

It should have been easy. Fairly flat or downhill most the way. Riding through spectacular countryside, beside icy cold rivers and through quaint little Scottish villages, BUT the day started badly when the hotel manager had locked my bike away and I couldn’t get it until 06:30 so was 2.5 hours late leaving, and already 1.5hrs behind schedule after not reaching Perth Thursday night. (Hen followed a puncture, one so bad I had to get Vicky and Stalin to come and deliver a new inner tube. Try cycling around the ring road of Edinburgh was almost impossible and took and hour longer than planned.

At this point I could have broke down and cried as I didn’t want to let every down by not making it in time.

The day then improved with a stunning ride across to Abington and then heading south along one of the best cycle routes I have ridden all the way to Carlisle, hit a top speed of 39 mph and average of 23mph.

Did my good Samaritan bit after finding a motor cyclist and his daughter pushing their bike as they ran out of fuel. I called Vicky and Stalin for help and they came along with a supply of fuel so they could be on their way.

Stopped in Lockerbie for Steak and Chips which gave me the energy boost I needed for the next 30 miles in pitch blackness. Along the way I saw something quite remarkable. A Comet flying through the sky it looked quite low and was disintegrating along the way.

I am still slightly behind schedule. But if I have a good day Saturday I think I can still make it.

David

Fri 21/09/2012 09:53 - Not a great start

The frigging hotel manager decided to lock the garage last night when we were told it would be left open so didn’t get my bike till 6:30. Oh well gave me another 2 hours sleep but means I’ll be cycling till about 11pm as need to try and reach Kendal. Weather is glorious this morning, so that’s one good thing. Currently in Milnathort and heading for the Edinburgh Ring Road and then cut across country to Carlisle and onwards. Still confident I can do it in 4 days, arriving Lands End late night Sunday.

Will keep you updated

Thu 20/09/2012 22:29 - What an emotional day

Early morning – Joy that I was on my bike doing what I love, especially at sunrise, a spectacular sight.

Midday – Happiness that I was on schedule and still feeling Ok considering I had already cycled over 100 miles.

2PM – Anxious as I was running late due to the number of hideous hills in my way

4PM – Pride after reading all the comments from those that are following me on Facebook and replies to my emails.

6PM – Horror at the thought of riding for 2hrs in freezing rain, uphill while cycling over the Pass of Drumochter.

8PM – Disappointed that I didn’t quite reach Perth but the A9 was dangerous enough during the day so didn’t want to risk riding it in the dark and fog so stopped 26 miles Short at Pitlochry.

Arrived soaked through, freezing cold and aching. Let’s hope I can move when I wake up at 3am.

Thu 20/09/2012 11:02 - Just outside Inverness

Half of today’s ride almost over. Cold and wet start but just had a change of clothes and ready for the next 120 miles to Perth!

Unforgettable Bequia Beach Hotel for the last ‘hoorah’

Unforgettable Bequia Beach Hotel for the last ‘hoorah’

31 August 2012 | Comments (0)

Thank you to Kate Land, one of Western & Orientals’ clients,  for sending us this fantastic blog about her holiday to the 4* Bequia Beach Hotel in St. Vincent & Grenadines.

We went to Bequia Beach Hotel for a last ‘hoorah’ before our baby arrives in September 2012, and it was just what we needed! A very relaxed, fun, and beautiful place.

We had breakfast every morning looking out at the lovely Friendship Bay, where we also enjoyed snorkelling – right in front of our beach front suite at the 4* Bequia Beach Hotel. There are some reefs on either side of the bay, and we got to see lots of fish, crabs, eels and coral.

We also loved Princess Margaret Beach that was a short taxi ride away. The water on this side of the island was calmer because it faces the Caribbean rather than the Atlantic. And right on the beach is Jack’s Bar, which does a great BBQ with a couple of guys covering some classic tunes.

A highlight of our trip was a visit to the turtle sanctury and Firefly Hotel. These are at the North end of the island (but again, only a short ride away), and the Firefly grows a lot of the produce that they cook in their restaurant.

We took a tour of the grounds with their very informative gardener, and we got to eat mangoes off the tree, and drink fresh coconut water, and fill up our bag with waxed apples. But we still had room for an awesome lunch afterwards. At this point the heavens opened, but that didn’t matter – we looked out on the rain from the comfort of the restaurant before heading back to our lovely beach hotel for a swim in the pool (and more food!).

All the restaurants we went to were excellent – and a lot of them also cook BBQ buffets on one night of the week, with some sort of live music playing in the background. And The Frangipani in Port Elizabeth put on a great spread, with an awesome steel band – very Caribbean!

But one of our favourite afternoons was when we went to watch a cricket match in town – we’d made friends with our taxi driver, who was playing that afternoon and had invited us a long. There was a local league, with 8 teams from Bequia alone (not bad for such a small island!), but this time, one of them was playing a team from another island. It was a great atmosphere (Bequia won!), and a nice thing to do on a lazy afternoon with a few beers.

Bequia Beach Hotel gave us an unforgettable holiday, and surpassed all expectations. We can’t wait to return one day, with our expanded family.

Visit Borneo, A Nature Lovers Dream

Visit Borneo, A Nature Lovers Dream

19 July 2012 | Comments (0)

Thank you to Kate Kuchnowska of Western & Oriental for writing this wonderful blog about her once in a life time experience in Borneo.

Borneo holidays are all about nature.  I love nature of course, but North Downs in Surrey are wild enough for me. However my travel companion had a very different idea. She did treks in Columbia and Ethiopia, she travelled Zanzibar on her own, she wanted to see real jungle with undiscovered tribes and leaches 5 inches long.

River Lodge beside The Kinabatangan River

River Lodge beside The Kinabatangan River

“No way” – I protested – “I’m not trekking for a week, I’m not sleeping outdoors  and I’m definitely not discovering monster leeches!”

As a result of a compromise we booked an overnight tour to the jungle lodge at Kinabatangan River. We were picked from Sepilok and after about 3 hours of comfortable journey we arrived at our accommodation. We hardly had time to drop our bags and enjoy a cup of tea before we were taken to the boat and rushed up the river.

Elephants beside The Kinabatangan River

15 minutes later we came face to face with a family of pigmy elephants playing at the river bank. Seeing elephants in the wild was one of my life-long dreams and here they were, jumping, dancing, pulling each other’s tails and generally having fun only 10 meters from our boat!

My friend looked at me: “Are you crying?” “Yes” I mumbled, embarrassed. They were so beautiful, so funny and I waited for them more than 20 years!

Finally the animals disappeared in the forest and we proceeded with our tour up the river to see proboscis monkeys, monitor lizards, birds and crocodiles. My friend was particularly excited about the crocodiles, but they were obviously not hungry this day or went hunting somewhere else.  We have met local people rowing slowly through mangrove forest instead.

Dusk started falling slowly. “I think the elephants may be in the village” – announced our guide – “Shall we check?”

The village was spread on both banks of the river. The elephants were rather noisily enjoying their dinner of bamboo shoots. We joined 2 boats with local families, kids excited about seeing elephants and parents not sure if they should watch the animals or their children.

It was getting dark. In front of us the sun was setting over the rain forest, on the left we could make out shades of the elephants, on the right fog started rising from the jungle and spreading to the river. Everything went quiet, waiting. Suddenly from the village mosque the muezzin started calling for the evening prayer, his melodic voice ringing above the river, the village and the ancient forest. “Magic” whispered my friend, and magic it was indeed.

The special moment didn’t last long. By the time we arrived back for dinner the air was full of mysterious noises. We were given a pair of wellies and a torch each and we went for a night jungle walk – the adventure I dreaded even to think about. The mud was ankle-deep, vines and branches were hanging everywhere and you had a feeling that unknown, but terrible danger was waiting to happen. I glanced at my friend, she looked ecstatic!

“Oh God” – I thought – “if I survive this walk I will give my ex-boyfriend second chance. He was always removing tree creepers from my way, I hate them!”

My friend must have seen how pale I was, as she put a hand on my shoulder and whispered “You will be fine. I will hold the vines for you, ok?” So she did and off we went, me holding my breath and trying not to see anything around me and her obviously having one of the happiest moments of her life! The forest was dense, dark, humid, noisy and believe me I didn’t want to know what is hiding in it, but I survived!

After a good nights sleep and another boat ride at 5am there was a time to decide where our Borneo holidays would take us to next. Well… we went to Brunei for 2-night jungle trip with the ex-headhunters tribe.

Salsa dancing in the Caribbean paradise of Puerto Rico

Salsa dancing in the Caribbean paradise of Puerto Rico

17 July 2012 | Comments (0)

Puerto Rico has a lot more to offer than just stunning beaches. Its music – and in particular salsa – is enough to make even the least rhythmic get on their feet. Flamboyant, fun and easy for beginners, it’s no wonder salsa dancing is so popular. The upbeat music can be heard across the island, giving the perfect soundtrack to your holiday setting of rolling mountains and white, sandy beaches. Puerto Rico beach

It’s so popular that Puerto Rico even has a National Salsa Day, filling the streets with singing, trumpet playing and – of course – lots of salsa! So why should you try salsa? The music is infectious, and the steps are relatively simple. The social side is brilliant as you’re bound to meet new people, swap partners or even turn up without a partner! It’s considered rude to refuse a dance without good reason – which can be a good or bad thing!

To make the most out of salsa dancing in the original – and the best – setting, book a place on Western & Oriental’s ultimate salsa dancing holiday, including  salsa lessons, sightseeing and a momentous gala dinner where you can show off your moves. Best of all, guests will have a chance to meet Sir Bruce Forsyth and his wife Wilnelia Forsyth, long-time Puerto Rico fans, part-time residents and salsa experts! Globe-trotter travel specialist Julie Mathews on her favourite places in the world

Globe-trotter travel specialist Julie Mathews on her favourite places in the world

11 May 2012 | Comments (0)

When I was little, I grew up listening to fascinating stories told by my dad about the wonderful places that he visited around the world while working on a luxury cruise liner during the 1950s and 1960s. I was inspired to travel and couldn’t wait to see some of those destinations with my own eyes.

As soon as I was old enough, I took up an apprenticeship in travel and tourism and began my career in the travel industry.  I have worked for small independent travel agencies, a large global travel company in Mayfair and a traveller’s club in Knightsbridge and I have now recently joined the Western & Oriental team in London where I specialise in luxury travel in the Far EastArabia, Indian Ocean and the Caribbean.

I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit some fantastic places around the world both through work trips and personal holidays.  I am fascinated by places that are rich in culture, nature and beauty, I also love the ocean and enjoy shopping and dining in cities.

The Far East is one of my favourite destinations as it offers a perfect combination of culture, beautiful beaches, rainforests and exciting cities.

I particularly love Thailand, where the people are so friendly, there are so many temples, palaces and other places of historic interest to visit, fantastic food and markets, mangroves and islands with stunning beaches and fabulous luxury hotels with spas.  I especially loved the Pimalai on Koh Lanta, located on a hill on the edge of the mangrove with stunning views of the sea, and Rasananda on Koh Phanang, located on the most perfect beach I have ever seen. Both hotels are luxury boutique and have super spas, fantastic food and excellent service.  In the north I visited the fascinating city of Chaing Mai, where I climbed the 300 steps to visit the temple of Wat Prathat Doi Suthep that is perched on a mountside.  I also had an amazing day where I rode an elephant bareback through the mangrove; this was a great experience and one that I will always remember.

Chiang Mai

I also have a soft spot for Africa where I have been on safari several times including Samburi and the Masai Mara in Kenya and Shamwari in South Africa.  Watching the wildlife in the beautiful savannah is simply spellbinding.  Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities on earth, where you will find some of the best food and wine in the world.

I recently went to Barbados where I stayed at the lovely Fairmont Royal Pavilion which has a spot on the best stretch of beach. I stayed in one of their Beachfront Junior Suites that I highly recommend as they overlook the ocean and you can walk out from your private deck straight out to the beach.  I enjoyed swimming in the warm clear sea and at certain times of the day you can swim out and feed the turtles, this was a wonderful experience and a memory that I will treasure.

Barbados

Another highlight of my travels was a trip to India. I was there for two weeks so I was only able to see a small piece of this vast country, but I long to go back in the future and explore it further.  I visited Delhi, Jaipur, Samode, Agra and Mumbai.  We sat in the gardens of the Taj Mahal and had tea with our guide while he told us about its history, before taking us through to visit the temple and it was just as beautiful as I always imagined.  Samode Palace was also somewhere very special, it is a Heritage Hotel and was formerly a fort, it has been very well preserved and still has many original features, such as the marble floors and is full of antiques, it was a truly magical place full of charm and character, the service was outstanding, I was made to feel like a princess and it felt like I had gone back in time.

India

I still have a long list of places that I wish to visit, including the Himalayas, Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Botswana and Namibia to name just a few and there are always amazing new hotels opening up around the world so the list grows.  It’s great when clients come back from their trips and tell us all about their experiences and I always enjoy sharing my personal travel knowledge with clients too.
