The Dream Downtown in New York

The Dream Downtown in New York

9 May 2012 | Comments (0)

New York City is forever coming out with quirkier and more unique hotels with hoteliers trying desperately to outdo one another with flair and character. The Dream Downtown is one of those hotels.

View from Dream Downtown

Located on West 16th Street, only a few blocks from Union Square and the fashionable West Village, the Dream Downtown’s most unusual feature is the large oversized porthole windows left over from when the building used to be maritime offices. It gives a feeling of being on a boat or a submarine if it wasn’t for the spectacular views of the city. These views are at their best from the rooftop lounge, PHD which serves delicious cocktails like Linda’s Lemonade and Dream Girl with bits and bites. The bar opens at 5pm making it a perfect viewing point for the sunset and becomes the place to party as the night progresses.

The opening of the High Line last year and its much anticipated expansion is making this area of Manhattan the up and coming neighbourhood to be in and as the local park, you can often find many New Yorkers relaxing on one of the architecturally designed benches that blend discreetly into the design.

High Line

Away from the tourist hotspots of Times Square, the neighbourhood is pulsating with New Yorkers going about their day to day lives. Fashionable shops keep the streets active during the day while popular restaurants and bars cause the streets to come alive at night with activity. See our selection of New York city breaks here.

Whilst doing so, he took 6,237 photographs which he has pieced together as several beautiful fast-paced montages.

Kien wanted to capture the spirit of his journey and took time-lapse photos at every city that he travelled to. Each two-second scene comprises approximately 40-60 photographs.

The countries showcased within the video and on his 25,000 mile journey include Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Egypt, England, France, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Morocco, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay and the United States. 6 Phrases to remember for a day in Havana

6 Phrases to remember for a day in Havana

16 March 2011 | Comments (0)

Having been lucky enough to spend a few days in the fascinating Havana, here are the sentences I would recommend to any traveller. With them, you will be sorted from morning until late.

Cuban friend

Cuban friend

“Thanks for the tips, mate”

9am: Jamon y queso por favor! (“Ham & Cheese please!”)

To me, these are the best ingredients to add to your scrambled eggs to kick start the day. Most of the hotels actually offer great breakfasts to their guests and with this typical grill, you will easily have enough energy to wonder around Havana until lunchtime.

11am: No fumo, gracias (“I don’t smoke, thanks”)

Even after that, the (never aggressive) person who’s trying to sell you Cohibas, Romeo y Juliettas or any other famous Cuban cigars might insist for you to buy some as a gift, but this will help you smoothly getting rid of at least half of them! Unless you really know about cigars (and fake ones) the safest purchase is at a official retail store (hotel, airport…).

1pm: Donde esta el Malecon? (Where’s the Malecon?)

Don’t miss a stop to see the typical image of Havana with its interesting buildings and monuments, all along the sea, an essential part of your Cuba city break. Get some street food (bocadillos – sandwiches – or pizzas) in the nearby vibrant streets for a quick lunch under the sun and relax later on the terrace of the massive Nacional Hotel, for an after lunch coffee, or cocktail of course.

5pm: Donde esta la terraza? (“Where’s the terrace?”)

To a hotel receptionist.  To get the best views in Havana, roof terraces are the best spots by far. A few hotels in Old Havana offer a bar on top of them (such as Parque Central and Saratoga) from where you can admire the Capital, the Cathedral and all the wonders of the Cuban unique architecture, plus the sea, all of this while enjoying a drink and/or a meal!

8pm.  La Guarida por favor (“La Guarida please”)

To a taxi driver, to be taken to one of the top paladares (family – no state – owned restaurant) in Havana. Dishes are fine, wine is good, and the pictures of celebrities decorating the patio walls let you know the place has to be taken seriously! Dining isn’t that cheap here, but still affordable (at least for tourists). A great dining experience, which is rare in Cuba, in a great atmosphere: not to be missed!

11pm. La misma! (“The same!”)

Head to the Floridita bar, one of  Ernest Hemingway’s favourites , and indulge yourself with a few (or more) expert made cocktails, from the classic Daiquiri, frappé or not, toThe old man and the sea writer ‘s own creation, the well-named Papa Hemingway. Cigars are also available to complete the experience!

UNESCO Trulli Houses

Oh…The Beautiful Country

15 March 2011 | Comments (0)

When you live with an Italian, it’s hard not to love everything about Italy! The food is delicious, sunshine is plentiful, scenery and cities are sublime and there is a wealth of art and history that will keep you busy for years! There are not many places left in Italy that I haven’t visited or passed through while driving and of all the countries in the world, this has to be my favourite!

There are a many places in Italy that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. In my experience, the cities in Italy are always a good option for a short holiday in Italy or as part of a multi centre holiday. However below are a few places which can’t be missed!

Puglia

This unique corner of Italy is awash with secluded towns and hidden gems that beg to be seen! One of the highlights of this area is the curious looking ‘trulli’ houses with conical roofs and white washed walls that date back to before the 16th Century.  They have become a national monument are are protected by UNESCO. Some great cuisine can be found here and the weather is beautiful all year round and popular with tourists during the long hot summers.

Sardinia

One of the most exquisite islands in Italy is Sardinia, a magical destinations full of culture, beaches and scenery that will astound every visitor on their Sardinia holidays. The turquoise waters and white sandy beaches will lure you in and the charismatic towns are worth a visit. As with anywhere in Italy, the food here is mouth watering with freshly caught local fish served in nearly every restaurant and the home made pizzas are yummy too!

Sardinia Beach

Courmayeur
If you prefer to hit the slopes than the beach then head to Courmayeur! Sitting just beneath europe’s highest Mountain Mont Blanc, Courmayeur offers an impressive ski experience. Not being a keen skier myself (due to an incident when I attempted many years ago!) I tend to stay closer to the bars and enjoy the ambience of the local town. There are also ice skating rinks and snow shoe walks which are great fun for families. But for ski enthusiasts, Courmayeur ensures the high quality of snow cover throughout the ski season. Definitely a must in my books!
