North East India

From the mangrove swamps of West Bengal to Buddhist monasteries perched high in the Himalayas, India's north east offers astounding diversity in both landscape and culture. In the Eastern Himalayas, Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain, looks down on Darjeeling's tea plantations, nature reserves and tiny hill stations, while south of Calcutta in Orissa there are sandy beaches and the great medieval Surya (Sun) temple.

Calcutta
Rich in character and indomitable in spirit, Calcutta, today named Kolkata, is India's city of extremes. Starting out as a trading post for the East India Company, it became a major centre of commerce for muslin, grain, silk and tobacco, and a cultural hub. Colonial architecture, temples and museums make for plenty to see and do.

Sunderbans
The delta of the Ganges in West Bengal and Bangladesh forms the largest expanse of mangrove forest anywhere in the world. As such, its 10,000 square kilometers of swamps, waterways and woodlands are home to royal Bengal tigers, deer, crocodiles and snakes, best seen by taking a boat cruise.

Puri
South of Calcutta on the coast lies Puri and, nearby, the famous Surya temple at Konark. Puri, famous for its own Jagannath temple, is a bustling seaside town with long white beaches. At Konark, the Surya temple represents one of the pinnacles of Indian medieval architecture and is celebrated for its lavish erotic carvings.

Darjeeling
Forever synonymous with the tea that bears its name and bounded by Nepal to the west and Bhutan to the east, Darjeeling still carries the hallmarks of its colonial past. The landscape is beautiful and the train journey up from the plains unforgettable. Blood-red rhododendrons and pearly white magnolias splash colour across the hills in an area ideal for trekking.

Gangtok
Capital of the state of Sikkim, Gangtok is well placed for exploring this mountainous and fascinating region. Visit the exquisite Buddhist monasteries at Rumtek, the Chogyal Royal Palace, take a yak trek into the hills for spectacular vistas or go white-water rafting on fast Himalayan rivers.

Kaziranga
The Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam on the flood plain of the Brahmaputra River comprises a lush wilderness of swamps, grassland and forest. This is the place to see the one-horned rhino, buffaloes, wild elephants, royal Bengal tigers, wild boar, jackal, monkeys, cobras, pythons, crocodiles and a myriad of spectacular birds.

Mumbai is truly a mish mash of all things diabolical. Pieces of old colonial architecture can be found around the city, wealthy residences alongside astonishing poor slums, a labyrinth of bazaars, restaurants, clubs, bars, shopping outlets and an equal number of cave-temples.

One of my highlights, was Elephanta Island, home to the three faced Hindu goddess Shiva.

Overall, disappointed that our trip wasn’t long enough, but knew it was a great start to many.

Kathmandu provides an adrenalin to the senses. Whizzing rickshaws, tucked away temples decorated in colourful flowers and some great choices for accommodation, it will delight any true traveller.

There are many great markets to pick great souvenirs, check out some of the beautiful architecture including the octagonal Krishna Temple.

The driving to Jaisalmer from Jodhpur through the stunning Thar desert and its sand dunes dotted with tribal villages will always be special for me. As one approaches closer seeing the Golden fortress simmer in the distance is always special.

It is such a frontier town with the beautiful colours everywhere from the fluorescent greens, and reds of the woman’s dresses contrasting with the terrain to the intricately carved Havelis and the numerous shops selling beautiful carpets and silver trinkets and the camels ambling by. I  absolutely loved walking inside the old town and watching the life go by and Jaisalmer  will always be one of my favourite places anywhere.

I have travelled extensively throughout India, both through business and pleasure and it was there I had my first personal encounter with an endangered species, a Royal Bengal tiger in Central India.

Since then  I have had the pleasure of witnessing India's rich diversity of wildlife, including the Nilgiri leaf monkey, the Asiatic lion, the Indian white-rumped vulture and of course, the majestic Indian elephants.
