After years of isolation, travellers are rediscovering holidays to Mozambique, with its 2,500 kilometres of virgin Indian Ocean coastline, its pristine tropical beaches fringed with coconut palms and endless coral reefs. Small lodges on virtually uninhabited islands make Mozambique the ideal honeymoon or post-safari beach destination. The Bazaruto Archipelago has been the main focus of attention, but the remote Quirimbas Archipelago, in the far north, will be the choice of demanding ecotourists, divers and adventurous souls in search of unspoilt places. Visit the Quirimbas now, while it is still relatively undeveloped.
This year, Mozambique has started to emerge as a safari destination. Some of the last truly wild areas can be found here, and intrepid safari operators are making these accessible.
If you have a night to spare, we recommend the charm of old Maputo. Its acacia-lined avenues have come back to life and you will find a friendly welcome in this atmospheric, ex-colonial city with its rich architecture, Latin music and renowned Afro-Portuguese cuisine.
This is the home of peri-peri sauce, and a plate of Mozambiquan prawns is a must. At night, the Fere de Populare is alive with bars and discos and you can dance to seductive Latino beats. As long as you take care, and don’t wander on your own at night, it is a safe city in which to walk.
