Probably the most famous archaeological site in Latin America and recently voted one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu does live up to its hype. Its incomparable setting hundreds of feet above the Urubamba River, deep in the Andes and its well preserved Inca stone structures make it a must see highlight of any itinerary to Peru. Machu Picchu tours can be taken as a full day trip from either Cuzco or the Sacred Valley but we would certainly recommend you give yourself plenty of time to explore these spectacular ruins by spending at least one night close by.

Machu Picchu Tours by Train
Holidays to Machu Picchu start in Cuzco with perhaps a short stop in the Sacred Valley. Your journey to Machu Picchu depends on how you prefer to travel. For those who like to arrive in relaxed style, the train services from Cuzco wind through the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes. The Hiram Bingham is the most luxurious and elegant train on this route, offering a leisurely start to the day with brunch served mid-morning on the way to Machu Picchu and pre-dinner cocktails with live entertainment and dinner in the evening on your return to Cuzco. The Vistadome regular train service also runs between Cuzco or the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu for those with a more limited budget or who prefer a more flexible choice of departure and arrival times.

Inca Trail Tours - Trekking to Machu Picchu
For those who prefer more active pursuits and who have more time, take a guided trek along one of the traditional trails through the Sacred Valley towards Machu Picchu. Treks usually take between 4-7 days depending on which trail you choose and we always recommend at least 3 days acclimatising in Cuzco before trekking at high altitude. The classic Inca Trail takes 4 days, with 3 nights spent camping enroute. Note that these Inca Trail tours operate on a limited number of permits being issued for each departure date, so booking well in advance is essential. If you love walking but sleeping under canvas is not for you, try the Salkantay Trail on our Lodge to Lodge Trek programme. This 7 day programme includes accommodation in Inca-style mountain lodges with ensuite facilities, excellent food and outdoor hot tubs to soothe aching muscles after a long day's walking.
