Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is Thailand's second biggest city, set high in the mountains of the north and just a 50 minute flight from Bangkok. The city is famous for its historic temples and some of the best shopping in terms of quality and variety at the popular night market. It also provides a good base for visiting the various hill tribes and the numerous elephant camps.

Chiang Mai is cooler than Bangkok, particularly at night, and this is most noticeable in the months of November to January when the evenings and early mornings can be on the chilly side. The most rainfall usually occurs during the mid-summer months.

    Last winter, I booked myself in at the Soneva Kiri Resort on the island of Koh Kood in Thailand. The resort was surrounded by a large tropical rainforest which added to its exoticness and tranquility.
