For a Caribbean holiday with a French feel, head to Martinique.  Unlike any other country, the French have made their former colonies ‘departments’, akin to English shires. So when you arrive in these islands you need to do no more than flash your red passport – no forms to fill – as if you were still in Europe. The infrastructure is pure French, perfect roads, newly painted white lines and roundabouts to drive around the wrong way. It seems odd,  seeing people walking home early in the morning with their bread ‘baton’ under their arm for their breakfast.

Martinique is the seat of regional government, and the other main islands of the French Caribbean are Guadaloupe, the rebellious one, St Martin for going Dutch and then there is the sophisticated St Barthelemy which could have been hewn out of the Cote d’Azur and towed across the Atlantic to take advantage of the warmer winters.

Unsurprisingly, the cuisine is a great attraction for these islands, although the beaches and ambience in both St Barths and St Martin are very strong draws.
