Sri Lanka holidays offer a huge variety; pristine beaches, hilltop plantations, ancient cities, cave temples and an extraordinary abundance of wildlife. Not to mention the bustling capital city of Colombo with its wealth of museums, galleries and shops, the eerie Sigriva Rock or the luxurious indulgent spas on the south coast. For such a small island, it is incredibly diverse, which means Sri Lanka holidays are guaranteed to have something to suit everyone.

Sun seekers will love Sri Lanka for its incredible beaches where you can laze around on the glorious sand and soak in the rays while the warm Indian Ocean laps the shoreline. With such incredible scenery, Sri Lanka is a perfect destination for honeymoons and beach holidays. For those seeking a little more adventure on their holidays to Sri Lanka there are endless activities and sights to keep you occupied. Explore the incredible marine life; snorkel or dive off the coast, climb Adams peak – Sri Lanka’s holiest mountain- take a bicycle tour of Bentota, embark on a deep sea fishing adventure or set of in search of turtles returning to shore to lay their eggs at Rekawa.

There are so many incredible historical sights to be explored on your holidays to Sri Lanka; the ancient fort of Sigiriya is an incredible rock fortress which has been declared a world heritage site whilst Galle is a classic example of a European fortified city in southern Asia. In the lush tropical heart of the island, Kandy was a stronghold of the Sinhalese kings until it fell to the British in 1815 and became a centre of the tea trade. But its cultural heritage far pre-dates the British tea drinkers: in the Dalda Maligawa, or Temple of the Tooth, one of Buddha's teeth is kept as a sacred relic, putting it among the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. High among the hilly tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya, the tiny hill resort of Hatton makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding country. There is certainly plenty of culture to keep you enthralled on your holidays to Sri Lanka.

For the first-timer to Sri Lanka we would highly recommend taking a form of private tour to explore this amazing island.  It has so much to offer, not least seven UNESCO Heritage sites, mountainous tea plantations, rainforests, several National Parks boasting a wide range of wildlife including leopards, bears and elephants, and its beaches and marine life including whales and dolphins.  You can opt for just a night or two in Kandy to visit Spice gardens, Botanical gardens, Craft centres, Cultural shows and Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage en route, or extend to our Compact Sri Lanka five-day tour to take in Sigirya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa too.  Extending this into the Tea Country would be our Taste of Sri Lanka tour and this can be extended south to Yala National Park for a couple of days’ safari.  In the south-west there’s Galle, the fortified city and port and the Sinharaja Rainforest, both well worth a visit.

Sri Lanka is an ideal destination to combine with a contrasting one such as a Dubai or Abu Dhabi city stopover, perhaps an Oman beach and desert combination, a cultural Indian tour, or a Maldives beach – particularly popular for honeymooners.  A cultural tour such as our Compact Sri Lanka or Taste of Sri Lanka Tours is an ideal introduction to this beautiful island and then a short one hour flight brings you to Male for your hop to an island resort for true chilling!

Sri Lanka features a choice of beach resort areas; currently mostly on the west coast from Negombo just north of Colombo to Galle on the south western tip, and a few more relatively undiscovered on the south coast at Koggala and Tangalle.  These all tend to be stretches of golden sand between rocky headlands and with rather more surf in certain seasons. On the newly reopening east coast, however the opposite weather seasons and calmer strips of sand with shallower waters are the norm.
