Wildlife Holidays in Costa Rica
This narrow isthmus between two oceans contains a breathtaking variety of landscapes, micro-climates, bio-diversity and cultures. Discover active volcanoes, cloud-forest reserves and rainforest national parks, lakes and islands as well as a rich colonial history.
Costa Rica is a small country with immense beauty and variety which particularly appeals to nature lovers, walkers and birdwatchers. As well as the attractions of the active Arenal volcano, Monteverde cloudforest and some excellent beaches, Tortuguero provides a good introduction to the jungle whilst more experienced travellers may wish to explore the pristine tropical rainforest of the Corcovado National Park.
The Arenal Volcano lay dormant until 1968, when huge explosions triggered lava flows, and it has remained active ever since. It has a perfect conical shape, and its degree of activity varies from week to week. However, if you go for a walk on a clear night and at a safe distance you can usually see red-hot lava flowing and incandescent rocks jumping around the cone. Visit nearby Tabacon's therapeutic thermal springs at the foot of the volcano and soak in warm mineral pools. A few hours away, Monteverde Cloud Forest is a bewitching, magical place with emerald green foliage surrounded by whirling mists. It is perched on the edge of the Tilaran Mountains and home to over 400 bird species. Access is by 4-wheel drive vehicle... or horse.
