Honduras is the second largest country in Central America and is also one of the least explored. The country is home to a small population of around 7 million people and borders the Caribbean Sea, between Guatemala and Nicaragua while bordering the North Pacific between El Salvador and once again Nicaragua.

Honduras is an intriguing country with evidence of Mayan settlement dating back to at least 1,000 BC and rainforests that are home to a wealth of biodiversity. Native species include scarlet macaws, white-tailed deer, armadillos, sloths, toucans, rare and exotic butterflies and the elusive jaguar.

The population of Honduras is a mix of different, mainly Mayan, communities across the highlands & villages of Garifuna as well as island and coastal settlements. Copan is home to one of the most popular Mayan sites in Central America, right on the border with Guatemala. Further towards the north coast of Honduras, near the small coastal town of La Ceiba is the Pico Bonito National Park which is the country’s second largest covering 1073 square kilometres. The park’s size means that it is one of the most diverse in the country with habitats moving from tropical rainforest to leaf forests and into cloud forests the further into the mountains you move.

Honduras is also a world-class diving destination with the beautiful Bay Islands lying just off the same northern coast as Pico Bonito. The island of Roatan is the most popular place to stay and not only provides some of the best diving in the Caribbean but great value too.
