Chile Guide
About Chile

The Chilean diet consists of a variety of fruits, vegetables, fish, and seafood. Dining out is considered an event and is an important component to the culture.

Traditional drinks of the culture include Pisco, a heavy cola and brandy based drink and a variety of Chilean wines.

Chile is a multifaceted country with a breadth of activities that brings in large crowds of visitors every year. Art and entertainment are an integral part of the tourism industry within the country. The thriving nightlife, informal bars, lively museums, and plaza seal the entire package for why it is worth a stay here.

Before You Go

You do not need a visa to enter Chile. Upon arrival you will receive a tourist card which will be valid for 90 days. Be sure to take care of it because you must turn it back in at your departure.

It is strongly advised that you bring proof of a return flight.

The electric current of Chile is 220 volts with 50 cycles per second.

Chile is one of the safest countries in Latin America with low violent crime rates.

It is advised as with all travel destinations that you secure your belongings with care and remain aware of your surroundings, especially in large crowds.

There is a season in Chile to satisfy almost everyone. The southern charms including Torres del Paine are best seen in the summer (December through March).

The winter is a dream come true for skiers and the country’s northern resorts attract hordes from July through September.

It is advised that travellers ensure their Tetanus and Polio vaccines are up to date. In addition, it is recommended that Hepatitis A & C, Typhoid, and Yellow Fever vaccines are taken prior to arrival.

The flying from the UK is 17.5 hours.

The official language of Chile is Spanish.

The time difference is GMT -4 hours.

When You Get There

The combination of art and dance are at the heart of Chilean culture. Artists, both contemporary and classic are appreciated for their contributions and often host weekly installations.

The cueca is the national dance and is a full representation of courtship. Couples dance to a classical Chilean rhythm, twirling their handkerchiefs in mid-air to create a whimsical display of unity.

Santiago isn’t what I expected, the city is very retro and cosmopolitan, full of al fresco cafes, well preserved colonial buildings, a vibrant nightlife but most of all very artistic.

Almost everywhere you go, you can see that each murals has a somewhat creative and sometimes comical edge.  Mercado Centrale, Santiago´s biggest seafood market, is a good stop for some fresh yummy seafood.

Walk along the shops to Plaza des Armas, and watch many of the open public debates. As soon as the sunset hits, head down to La Piñotera Bar for some great local drinks and for a more authentic Chilean environment.
