Black Mountain Ranch

This high country escape is situated on 1,000 private acres set at an altitude of 8,200 feet between Vail and Steamboat Springs. The ranch is open from late May to mid-September, with the ranch week starting and ending on a Sunday. The atmosphere here is warm and welcoming, where the passion for ranch life shines through.

The riding programme is unlimited and caters to novices and experts (they allow loping), with all day rides and shorter rides through the extensive trail system in the spectacular Routt National Forest. There is also the award-winning overnight pack camp, where riders are welcomed for their route with a home made margarita before enjoying dinner from the open fire and a night under the beautiful starry sky.

There is also the chance to join the cowboys as they move the herd of Texas Longhorn cattle through the Colorado High Country. This thrilling full day out is normally held once a week, takes in roping practice, instruction and often includes branding.

Additional activities include adrenalin-pumping white-water rafting down the Colorado River, plus fly fishing, canoeing, hiking, nature walks, swimming and skeet shooting. Trips can be taking to nearby Vail or Steamboat Springs to watch the rodeo or indulge in some shopping. After a day spent enjoying these activities, the hot tub is the perfect place to unwind before spending time with fellow guests at the saloon with live music, learning the two-step. 

Children are welcomed at the ranch with open arms with the Little Wrangler programme, where they can enjoy traditional ranch activities such as learning to rope and watching the rodeo, plus visiting the baby goats, not even noticing that there are not televisions in the cabins. Able children are allowed on the same trails as their parents and whilst adults can enjoy gourmet cuisine (not to mention the onsite pastry chef), children are always provided with their own menu.

Adult only weeks are available throughout the season, where shorter stays are possible. Whatever the size of your party, accommodation ranges from cabin studios to three bedroom, two bathroom cabins.
