Borneo - Sarawak & Sabah
The relatively untouched region of Borneo conjures up mystical images of Orang Utans, rainforests and spectacular beaches – and in our suggested itinerary, we look at travelling through both Sabah and Sarawak in a perfect combination of cultural explorations, flora and fauna trails, big city glitz as well as a well deserved beach break.
This itinerary is not for the faint hearted, although we can offer alternative accommodation and touring choices.
Into the Heart of Borneo
For a luxurious cruising option, embark the Pandaw River Cruise which takes in the Iban people, the headhunters until the 1950’s and their amazing longhouse culture, wildlife and flora treks (for all levels), village visits and some of the most amazing scenery on the island. Price for the Pandaw River Cruise is additional to the cost of the itinerary below (enquire for more details).
Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure. [B]
Return via the golden-domed City Mosque and proceed on foot through Old Kuching, visiting the colourful Central Markets and navigating through the narrow alleyways crammed with spice dealers and textile shops. Pass by the heritage buildings of the White Rajah era, the Pavilion, the Square Tower, the Court House, the Charles Brooke Monument and the Post Office. Guests will also have a chance to visit the Astana, the former residence of the White Rajahs from across the river at the Kuching Waterfront.
The very best way to see and enjoy historic Kuching is from the Sarawak River, the main artery around which the city has grown and developed. This tour therefore gives you a view of the city and its surroundings that is impossible to experience from dry land from the comfort of a purpose-built pontoon boat which will cruise along the river and give you an opportunity to enjoy unobstructed views of every aspect of traditional life along the river. [B]
This small peninsula, 1 hour 30 minutes from Kuching by car and longboat, is home to seven distinct rainforest ecosystems, giving it a remarkable diversity of animal and plant life. Bako’s most famous residents are the bizarre proboscis monkeys, and it is also home to silvered langurs (leaf monkeys), long-tailed macaque monkeys, wild boar, flying squirrels and monitor lizards as well as hundreds of different bird species.
Fascinating plant life includes mangroves, strangling figs, carnivorous pitcher plants and symbiotic ant plants. Unique geological features mark the coastline, including the famous Sea Stack, whilst well-marked trails lead to rugged jungle-covered hilltops and secluded beaches. [B & Packed lunch is included]
Stop for lunch at Lachau, a small town on the way to the resort. Arrive at the Hydro lake at Lubok Antu. Board a shuttle ferry for the resort situated on the southern bank. Overnight at Batang Ai, Hilton Batang Ai Resort and stay in Standard Room for 2 nights. [B,L,D]
Note: If you arrive at the Resort before 1600 Hrs you can proceed for a Nature Walk with the Hotel Recreation Staff if weather permits.
Breakfast at the Resort then depart for Mengkak Longhouse by motorized native longboat. The journey will take you across the lake into the Engkari River, one of the many tributaries flowing into the lake. The journey will take approximately 30 minutes before reaching Mengkak Longhouse, which is nestled on a hill beside the river.
Enjoy a short cultural performance by the inhabitants of the longhouse followed later on by a blow pipe demonstration. Lunch will be provided.
After lunch free at leisure until your return back to the Resort via the same route for Dinner and overnight. [B,L,D]
Overnight in Kuching at the Damai Puri Resort in a Deluxe Seaview for 2 nights. [B,L,D]
Guests are also able to visit sister property, the Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort for an opportunity to learn about the famed Orang Utans in the Nature Reserve located adjacent to the resort. [B]
