Oman: Nature, History and Culture Tour

This private tour for 2 or more people takes in Oman's cultural and historical highlights; the stunning scenery of the mountains, desert and wadis; and the unforgettable experience of turtle watching.

Day 1
London to Muscat
Depart London Heathrow on your Oman Air flight to Muscat overnight. On arrival in Muscat you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check-in. Overnight at Haffa House Hotel (B).
Day 2
Nakhal and Rustaq
Today visit Rustaq and Nakhal. Rustaq is famous for its hot water springs which are said to have medicinal value. Also visit Al Hazm Fort, known for its beautiful gates which are adorned with verses from the Holy Koran. The next stop is Nakhal where you will visit the highest fort in Oman. A stop is also made at Al Thowara Oasis. Overnight at Al Sawadi Beach Resort (B, L).
Day 3
Nizwa, Jabreen Castle, Bahla
Today you head to Nizwa - one of the largest cities in Oman and the capital of the interior region. Visit Nizwa Fort which has been strategically built on a hilltop overlooking the ancient city. From here, proceed to Jabreen Castle. Built during the late 17th century, the castle displays beautiful ceiling paintings and intricate wood carvings. On the way back to Nizwa, stop at Bahla Fort, the oldest and first Omani fort to be built in the Islamic style. Stops will also be made at a pottery unit and Tanuf Springs before returning to Nizwa in time for lunch. Overnight at
Golden Tulip Hotel or Falaj Daris Hotel (B, L).
Day 4
Jabal Shams
Oman's Grand Canyon is situated amidst the rocky terrain of the Jabal Shams mountain which, at over 3,000 metres high, makes it the highest mountain in Oman. The name Jabal Shams literally means “Sun-Mountain" in Arabic. The view from the top over the Grand Canyon is absolutely breathtaking. The trip will be in a four-wheel drive vehicle. You might even be pleasantly surprised to see a few shepherds accompanying their grazing
sheep! Overnight at Golden Tulip Hotel or Falaj Daris Hotel (B,L).
Day 5
Jabal Akhdar and Wahiba Sands
This morning visit Jabal Akhdar, or "Green Mountain" in Arabic, 2,800 metres above sea level. Enjoy a four-wheel drive ride up the mountain side. A picnic lunch will be provided en-route. After lunch proceed on to the mountain peak with its breathtaking views. Next stop is Wahiba Sands. A vast mass of undulating sand dunes
rising up to 200 metres and stretching as far as the eye can see. A short visit to a Bedouin home will be made. Enjoy an exhilarating round of “dune bashing". Watch the sunset over the camp from the top of the dunes before enjoying a traditional Arabic dinner. Overnight at Desert Camp (B,L,D). Supplement to upgrade to Luxury Camp.
Day 6
Wadi Bani Khalid and Turtle Watching
Today visit Wadi Bani Khalid. The wadi (“valley" in Arabic) has clear deep blue waters and shady palm trees and we recommend that you
bring along your swimwear and enjoy a refreshing swim. After a picnic lunch drive on to Sur and check into the hotel. After dinner, drive to Ras Al Jinz for your turtle watching experience. On arrival the rangers will take you to the place where the green turtles nest on the beach. The turtles can be seen late at night from
9pm to 11pm and then again early in the morning. Overnight at Carapace Hotel (B,L).
Day 7
SUR
Today you will visit Sur harbour and witness the fishermen in action. Proceed on to the Dhow building yard. Dhows are traditional Omani wooden fishing boats that are, even today, built by hand. Head back to Muscat visiting the tomb of Bibi Miriam, Wadis Tiwi and Shab, Bimah Sinkhole and the fishing village of
Quriyat en route. Overnight at Haffa House Hotel (B,L).
Day 8
Muscat to London
After breakfast enjoy a city tour of Muscat, before your transfer to
Muscat airport for your overnight homebound Oman Air flight to London Heathrow. Alternatively extend your stay at one of Oman's
beach hotels (B).

Muscat, you will find out very quickly resembles very little from its Emirate neighbours. It is an elegant city that has preserved its culture but at the same time is very forward thinking and progressive.

You can take it easy and watch ships pulling into the harbour or do as we did, explore the desert dunes and unspoilt beaches in the Sharqiya region.

  • Erica Moore

Oman is a great mix of Arabic culture, deluxe hotels, great beaches, and strange moon-like landscapes with the odd camel thrown in for good measure! This fantastic country has something for everyone including beautiful romantic luxurious hotels for honeymooners and fantastic kids clubs for families with children of all ages. In addition to the pools and beaches, Oman is very proud of its culture and heritage and the museums, Grand Mosque and souks here are fascinating.

One of my favourites, a real feast for the senses and not to be missed, is a trip out to the desert, perhaps with a stay at a luxury desert camp included. Here you have the opportunity to do some dune bashing, quad-bike riding and camel riding or you can just sit back and enjoy the beauty of Oman's desert landscape.
